Out and About

What is this group?

Out and About is an East Auckland-based queer youth group, providing social contact outside of a night club environment for queer and questioning youth. Out and About was established in December 2009 and has grown to a reasonable size group today. Out and About is drug, smoke and alcohol free.

Who goes to it?

Anyone from age under 27 (high school and university aged). Many are questioning their or have just recently come out or/and are looking to make more friends. We have a mixture of people from Botany, Pakuranga and Howick. We’re here for people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, takataapui or fa’afafine, asexual, intersex or curious and questioning.

When do we meet?

We meet fortnightly Fridays at Columbus Café at Botany Town Centre. 5pm to 6pm. The group alternates to GQ meetings. Check out the facebook page to find out what’s happening!

How to get there?

If you drive, there are plenty of car parks in Botany Town Centre. If you rely on public transport, most parts of East Auckland can get to Botany Town Centre with the Howick & Eastern’s ‘Connector’ buses for only 1 stage. There are many buses that conveniently go to Botany Town Centre from South Auckland.

Facilitators

Jo and Gage.

What we mean when we say queer

A reclaimed word that represents sexuality and gender diversity. We use it to encompass lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, fa'afafine, and takataapui identities, as well as everyone in between and not sure. This word is used by many people, but it is also appreciated that it is not the preferred term for everybody.
