Generation Queer, or GQ as its more commonly known as amongst the people who go, is the Rainbow Youth social group for those who identify as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Takataapui, Fa’afafine or just plain not sure and are aged 19 and under.
GQ has been running for just over 6 years and is still going strong. The numbers of people which attend GQ differ each week but recently the numbers of those attending have been around 12 – 20 people. We have a nice mixture of people ranging in ages from 14yo to the oldest being around 19yo, with most people that come being around 15yo to 17yo. But it is basically a group for those around the high school age group. But in saying that, we have people coming along from high school and Uni, and those who are out working too. We have people coming along from all parts of Auckland, from as far south as Manukau, up to as far north as Orewa. A lot who come at the moment are coming from the North Shore, East Auckland and from out west.
We meet every fortnight on a Friday night from 6pm onwards at the Rainbow Youth Centre. Coming along once doesn’t commit you to anything, not everyone who comes is a regular, and it’s understandable that we as young people have all sorts of commitments, from high school, to outside interest. Some come every time, some come every once in a while, but your always welcome. GQ is a place where young like-minded come together, have a coffee, chat about things, about school and the rest.
Great friendships are formed among the people who come along-friendships that last. We have a great time every time, so if you’re keen to come along, get in touch and we can sort you out with details of where and when we meet.
